Student Conduct and Community Standards

Outcomes

During the student conduct review process within the Office of Student Conduct & Community Standards, a finding of responsibility will result in appropriate outcomes being assigned. These outcomes may include a community status and terms.

Community Status

A community status is a formal standing assigned to a student as a consequence of violating Brown’s Code of Conduct. These statuses reflect the severity of the violation and outline the restrictions and expectations imposed on the student. The different community statuses are as follows:

  1. No Community Status Assigned: In cases where a student violates the Code but no formal community status is imposed, a letter of responsibility and outcomes is issued as a written notice of the violation. Despite the violation, the student remains in good community standing.
  2. Probation: A temporary status during which the student must demonstrate adherence to the community’s behavioral expectations. Students under probation are considered not to be in good community standing.
  3. Suspension: A temporary separation from the University, during which the student cannot participate in University programs or be on University property without written approval. Re-enrollment is contingent on satisfying any assigned terms. Suspension is permanently recorded on the student’s academic records.
  4. Expulsion: Permanent separation from the University with a prohibition on accessing University property or participating in any University activity. Expulsion is permanently recorded on the student’s academic records.

Any violation of these statuses or terms can lead to further review and more severe consequences, such as additional hearings or further disciplinary actions.

Terms

The Administrative Reviewer or Hearing Officer(s) may assign terms to promote responsible behavior, foster learning, and address the impact of a student’s conduct. Examples include restitution, reflection papers, letters of apology, restorative dialogues, educational programs, No Contact Orders, or referrals to campus resources.

For cases involving a community status, additional University restrictions may be imposed, such as housing reassignment or removal, denial of off-campus permission, restrictions on representing the University, limits on leadership roles, or limited access to University events.
