Brown University maintains a comprehensive set of policies and regulations that govern student life and conduct. Various offices across the University play a key role in overseeing and administering these policies to support a safe, equitable, and well-regulated campus environment.

University Offices Responsible for Policy

Several offices across Brown University are responsible for overseeing and implementing policies and regulations that help maintain a safe, equitable, and well-structured campus environment. Below, you will find a selection of these offices and their areas of focus.

The Office of Equity Compliance and Reporting serves students, faculty and staff by ensuring compliance with federal and state civil rights laws and supporting those who report incidents of discrimination or harassment.
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) functions as the University’s law firm, responsible for all of the University’s legal affairs. The OGC provides advice and counsel on legal and risk management areas, as well as major policies, initiatives and programs of the University.
The Office of Government Relations (OGR) protects and advances the University's interests in the political, policy and regulatory areas at the federal, state and city levels.
The Student Activities Office has created a handbook for student organizations at Brown which is inclusive of all necessary policies related to recognition, events, safety, applicable campus policies, and more.
The Title IX and Gender Equity Office (within the Office of Equity Compliance and Reporting) ensures compliance with Title IX and other laws developed to promote gender equity; it is a key component of Brown's efforts to provide a diverse and inclusive working and learning environment.
At Brown, departments with the appropriate subject matter expertise are responsible for compliance with applicable laws, regulations and policies. University Compliance then serves to provide oversight to improve consistency, quality and efficiencies across the University, and to help ensure appropriate compliance programs and frameworks are in place.
